The Ruhuhu Basin is well known for large tonnages of high quality thermal coal, including the substantial Ketewaka, Mchuchuma and Ngaka coalfields, with published resources exceeding 1 billion tonnes. At the Mkuju project, Uranex has had good results, with high grade uranium intersections from its initial drilling program in May.

The three largest coalfields, known as Ketewaka, Mchuchuma and Ngaka, occur in a similar geological setting and lie within 50 kilometres of the Lumecha Coalfield. A recent US$3 billion agreement between the Tanzanian Government and China's Sichuan Hongda will see the development and mining of the adjacent Mchuchuma Coalfield, …
The coal is hosted in the lower Sandstone-Coal Facies (SCF) and upper Shale-Coal Facies (ShCF) of the Lower Permian Mchuchuma Formation. Coal samples were obtained from exploration bore hole and from outcrops. Vitrinite is realatively abundant in coal seams hosted in SCF and relatively low in the ShCF. ... particularly for Ketewaka-Mchuchuma ...
The aim is to develop a medium-size coal mine at the Mchuchuma-Ketewaka coalfield that will provide coal for power generation. Small isolated coalfields named the Mbamba Bay, Njuga and Mhukuru coalfields (Fig. 1) have not yet been studied in detail, and the available data on reserves and coal quality are based on estimates obtained from ...

Facies characteristics of the lower/middle and upper Mchuchuma Formation and the »Scarp sandstone« of the overlying Ketewaka formation exhibit synsedimentary basin subsidence. Vitrinite reflectance data suggest similar temperature gradients and burial history for the Mchuchuma and Ngaka subbasins.
The geochemical analyses showed all samples to be rich in organic matter of Types II and III and samples from Songwe Kiwira, Namwele, Mbamba Bay, Njuga and Mhukuru coalfields were in an early mature-mature stage of hydrocarbon generation. Whereas samples from Ketewaka and Ngaka coalfields showed a GC-trace of early …

The present paper deals with palynological dating of the Baikouquan Formation in Karamay region, northwestern Junggar Basin, Xinjiang. The spores and pollen include 29 genera and 50 species, of which 5 species are new. The palynological assemblage is closely similar to that from the Upper Jijicao Formation of southern Junggar Basin.

The general geology of the Ketewaka--Mchuchuma coalfield was described by McKinlay (1954), who established the litho-stratigraphy of the area and demonstrated a close correlation with the general lithological sequence of the Karroo system as this is known in the larger area of the Ruhuhu basin in southwest Tanzania. The age of the …
